July 28, 2011, Leuven, Belgium]----I came across this fascinating article that claims nose jobs are connected to mental illness. Now that would explain the obsession of some with repeated rhinoplasty to the point of their noses collapsing. I will not name names, but you know of a few, whose public disfigurement was legendary.
According to Everyday Health's article,Nose Jobs Linked to Mental Illnessa new study finds that 1 in 3 patients who undergo a nose job, suffers from a type of mental illness called Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
Researchers at the University of Leuven in Belgium, Germany found that BDD was exceedingly high among patients seeking that particular plastic surgery procedure and that doctors needed to be aware of the dangers.
After a 16 month period of surveying 299 people wanting nose jobs, researchers reportedly found that 33 percent suffered from mild to severe forms of BDD: 43 percent for those who wanted the procedure solely for cosmetic purposes and 2 percent for those needing it for medical reasons.
Body Dysphoric Disorder is where those suffering from the illness obsesses with their appearance--finding faults with and changing parts of their body when there is nothing wrong with them. They see what others cannot see and strife to achieve unrealistic goals.
