Double amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius was charged with murdering his girlfriend at his home in Pretoria, South Africa.

According to USA Today, 26-year-old Pistorius shot 29-year-old model Reeva Steenkamp dead early Thursday morning and is due in court on Friday.

South Africa’s police have not revealed much about the case but the Daily Mail stated the shooting may have been a Valentine's Day suprise gone tragically wrong. Pistorius allegedly said he shot Steenkamp around 4:00 a.m because he mistook her for an intruder.

However, NBC Sports has reported that Steenkamp was shot four times in the head, chest and arm. Before the fatal shooting, a loud argument was heard coming from the couple at Pistorius’s home. A neighbor called to report the shooting. The AP is reporting that there were other reported incidents at that home in the past.

The South African Agency said Steenkamp, who was also a contestant on the reality television show "Tropika Island of Treasure 5,” died at the scene of the crime. Allegedly murdered by her boyfriend one day after she excitedly tweeted the following about Valentine's Day:

What do you have up your sleeve for your love tomorrow??? #getexcited #ValentinesDay

@gossig That sounds amazing! Wow that's what it's all about! It should be a day of love for everyone :) may it be blessed!

Police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes reportedly said that though it is customary not to announce suspects until they had appeared in court, Pistorius was the only person at the home, rendering him the only suspect. She added that the Paralympic and Olympic runner is undergoing forensic, drugs and alcohol tests.

Bail will most likely be denied the suspect, Beukes said.

This arrest and murder charge is shocking to many, for the world cheered as double-amputee Pistorius competed at the the 2012 Olympics in London with able-bodied athletes--representing South Africa in the 1,600 meter. relay.

After his selection for SA’s team, he was so ecstatic he sent out the following tweets, “"Today is really on of the happiest days of my life! Will be in (at) London2012 for both the Olympic and Paralympic Games!" "Thank you to everyone that has made me the athlete I am! God, family and friends, my competitors and supporters! You have all had a hand!"

Pistorius was the first double amputee track athlete to compete at the Olympics and was an inspiration to us watching as well as his fellow cpmpetitors. Grenadian gold medalist and world champion Kirani James even exchanged his name tag with him, saying this about the athlete they called "Blade Runner," "Oscar is special--it's a memorable moment for me to be out there competing with him."

Pistorius legs were amputated when he was just 11 months old because he suffered from a fibular hemimelia (congenital absence of the fibula). The condition rendered his legs between the knees and ankles useless.
